Accused Sex Offender to Stand Trial in YK
A man accused of several sex- related charges alleged to have occurred in Hay River in 2006 will go to trial. A preliminary inquiry this week determined there is sufficient evidence to send John Murray Melanson to the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories. Shannon Smallwood is the Crown Prosecutor in the case and says the court heard evidence against Melanson on eight different charges. “He was committed to stand trial on two counts of touching for a sexual purpose a person under the age of 14 years old. He was committed also on three counts of breaching probation order… two counts of committing a sexual assault, and he was also committed on a count of possession of child pornography.” He has previously been convicted of sex-related crimes in Manitoba and Ontario. He’s now in custody at the North Slave Correctional Centre in Yellowknife. The trial date has not yet been set.
